➔ Objectives

➔ Communication: transfer of information and data from one person to another
➔ Branson and Buffett: communication is a fundamental skill now more than ever
◆ Globalization
◆ Changes related to technology
◆ Communication channels are increasing and changing
● Texting vs calling
➔ Communication channels: which would you use?
◆ Dinner with friend a week in advance → text messaging
◆ Discuss private matter with supervisor → face to face
◆ Work team agreeing on a weekly meeting time → google calendars, Doodle
◆ Terminating team member’s employment → face to face
◆ Securing candidate for job interview → email or call
◆ Positive change in process to give employees vacation days → email (if lots of ppl), group meetings (depends on
what the process is)
➔ Communication in action (videos)
◆ Obama speech → emphasis, repetition of a key message, identified issues that citizens can identify with (using
examples), passion and pauses to ensure message is understood and heard; allows the audience to absorb the
info, creating imagery (giving key occurrences in the last 100 years), intonation and enunciation (spoke
clearly, said complete word, wasn’t monotone), emotional but not exaggerated; getting them excited about
what’s to come
● Specified change
◆ Seinfeld episode → nonverbal communication sends messages
◆ Iverson → body language doesn’t suggest he thinks practice is important; he doesn’t actually believe it is
important
● Must always think about what we’re saying and how we’re saying it
➔ The meaning of communication
◆ The transfer and understanding of information from one person to another
◆ Is more than just words; includes facial gestures, feelings, voice inflections, emotions
➔ The communication process
◆ Sender: wishes to share information
◆ Message: information to communicate (eg change in policy in vacation pay)
◆ Channel: eg letter, face to face
◆ Receiver: person for which message is intended
◆ Feedback: to ensure message was understood
● Did you understand what I said? Paraphrase, write it down, head nods (please follow up by x date)
➔ Communication noise: anything that distracts the sender and the receiver in the communication process
◆ Eg you’re thinking about other things when someone talks to you, emotions, people in the room talking
◆ Noise → leads to barriers to effective communication
● Selective perception: ignoring information that conflicts with our own desires
○ Not listening/reading everything that’s been said
○ Just focusing in on the information that’s agreeable to me and my opinion
○ Eg reading the news, picking and choosing what to abide by
● Credibility of the source: how trustworthy a source is (source = person communicating the information)
○ Is what they’re saying actually accurate
○ Eg feedback regarding a restaurant or an organization
