Document Summary

Deviance is the study of why some ppl are just different (mass murderers, cult members, etc. ) Subculture: a sub-group that does not challenge mainstream society. Ex: to have blue hair is a sub-culture. Part of mainstream culture, keep culture moving so ppl always buy new products. Counterculture: a sub group that does challenge mainstream society. Ex: anarchy movement, occupy wall st movement, neonazis, neofacism. Hippies wanted to get rid of capitalism. Sometimes things pretend to be counter-culture when they are really just a sub-culture. Being a part of a sub culture you are being deviant. Deviance are ways of thinking and acting that are subject to social control. Social control are the ways in which members of social groups express their disapproval of ppl and behaviour. Deviance is behaviour that the rest of society disproves of. Sociologists study what groups come to be labelled as deviant in a society, why, and what are the repercussions.
