Document Summary

It emphasized inner and outer containments which can also be thought of as internal and external controls. This was a break from prior assumptions because reckless" theory focused on predictive factors things that pushed people into crime or pulled people from crime. Reckless argued that individuals can be pushed into delinquency by virtue of social environments lack of opportunity for education, lack of opportunity for employment and by individual factors as well having a risk taking personality. Individuals aren"t only pushed, they can also be pulled toward delinquency with respect to interacting with delinquent peers, exposure to excessive violence on. Reckess" theory goes beyond the notion of having inborn tendencies talks about natural dispositions and push/pull factors the pushes and pulls force criminality unless contained. Containments can be either external or internal. Internal containment: self-perception, retention of norms, goal orientation, frustration tolerance, internalization of rules. External containments: family, school, organizations that an individual might belong to, having role models.
