Establish rapport: most clinicians empathize with their clients. To encourage them to elaborate on their concerns. Need to pay attention to what was said, how it was said, and what wasn"t said. Mental status exam: appearance and behaviour, thought processes, mood and affect. Interviewer must rely on intuition and general experience. Reliability for initial clinical interviews is low: may fail to touch on important clinical information.
