With one giant alveolus, there"s only capillary that is around the giant alveolar wall. Gas exchange occurs when alveolar wall is next to a capillary. (much beter when there"s many alveoli so increase gas exchange) Gas exchange decreases with emphysema so amount of o2 that can enter to the blood goes down and. Co2 that can leave the blood goes up resp acidosis and chronic hypoxemia.
