Document Summary
Chronic obstrucive pulmonary disease acive smoking in 80-90% of individuals with copd. Copd heavily linked to smoking a preventable and treatable disease in the early stages some signiicant extrapulmonary efects characterized by airlow limitaion that is not fully reversible. Associated with an abnormal inlammatory response of the lung to noxious paricles or gases. Smoking chronic bronchiis emphysema chronic hypoxemia pulmonary hypertension cor pulmonale. And in emphysema, the alveolar walls (clamp of alveoli) signiicantly get thinner and start rupturing ending up with one giant alveolus. With one giant alveolus, there"s only capillary that is around the giant alveolar wall. Gas exchange occurs when alveolar wall is next to a capillary. (much beter when there"s many alveoli so increase gas exchange) Gas exchange decreases with emphysema so amount of o2 that can enter to the blood goes down and. Co2 that can leave the blood goes up resp acidosis and chronic hypoxemia.
