A sentence that allows a convicted offender to serve his or her sentence in the community, subject to certain conditions for a designated time period. (goff, 431) Some offenders not dangerous or threat to society: maximum length: 3 years for adults. Essentially: a contract between offender/state: most frequent of all community based punishments. Refraining from contact with criminal associates: notifying the court or probation officer of any change in employment or occupation. Common belief given to first time offenders, minor property crime. A sentence of imprisonment of less than 2 years that the offender serves in the community under both optional and mandatory conditions. (goff, 334) Remaining within a specific set of boundaries unless the court grant permission to leave. Informing the court or supervisor of any change in address or occupation. Curfews: mandatory medical and psychiatric treatment, orders preventing offenders from contacting other persons.
