March 11 will be the final midterm for the course. Remainder of the course consists of papers no final exam. Programs will be covered in class over the next few weeks. Propensity of adolescents to commit crimes is well-documented; as is the fact that majority of youth who commit offences do not re-offend. Adolescents lack fully developed sense of moral judgement. Adolescents lack intellectual and emotional capacity to assess consequences. Canadian statistics show that sending more youth to court does not deter future offences. Rj takes a more lenient approach to sentencing. Tough on crime approaches do not work with youth. Boot-camp style programs: do not have any deterrent effect. Beyond scared straight do the opposite of preventing recidivism. Project turnaround: ontario"s experimental facility as beyond scared straight programs. Take in high risk male offenders military style environment. Only offered 1. 5 hours of therapeutic training four times per week. 3 hours daily is required for preventing recidivism.
