Emile durkheim (1858- 1916: influential on the context of modern structural perspectives on crime, affected by: Industrial revolution: wrote his doctoral dissertation (1893) - university of paris. Was the 1st sociological dissertation at the university. Societies evolve mechanical (simplistic) to organic (multilayered: dissertation title the division of labour in society, mechanical societies: Members in the societies have the same functions (i. e. hunter and gatherers) and identical daily routines. This leads to similar work in addition to constant interaction which leads to a uniformity in values where everyone has the same values: collective conscience is the degree to which individuals in a society think alike. Mechanical solidarity - simple layered societal structure, strong collective conscience. Law exist to enforce conformity: societal progression in industrial age it becomes organic. Organic societies = distribution of labour is specified. Dependence on others (result of highly specified division of labour)
