Document Summary
Concept 1: an animal"s diet must supply chemical energy, organic, molecules, and essenial nutrients. Animal"s diet provides chemical energy, which is converted to atp and powers the body. Essenial nutrients are needed by cells and are obtained from dietary sources. Essenial amino acids, essenial faty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Animals need 20 amino acids and can synthesize molecules from their diet. The remaining essenial amino acids must be obtained from food in preassembled form. A diet that doesn"t have enough essenial amino acids causes" protein deiciency called malnutriion. Animals can synthesize most of their faty acids. The essenial ones are certain unsaturated faty acids. Vitamins are organic molecules required in small amounts. They are grouped into two categories; fat-soluble and water- soluble. Minerals are simple inorganic nutrients, usually required in small amounts. Undernourishment : consistently supplies less chemical energy than the body the body requires.
