PSYC*3140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Binge Eating, Pharyngeal Reflex, Eating Disorder
Document Summary
Bulimia nervosa: out of control eating habits (binges) are followed by excessive vomiting, use of laxatives or other ways of trying to remove food from the body (purge) Anorexia nervosa: eating nothing but the bare minimum, often causing the individual to lose excessive weight. Hallmark includes eating a larger amount of food than usual - mainly junk food; different than most people would eat in similar circumstances. Eating is considered out of control (binge) Attempts to compensate for this excessive eating by employing various purging techniques. Enlarged salivary glands, giving the face a chubby appearance. Erode dental enamel of the front teeth and inner surface. Electrolyte imbalance (specifically potassium and sodium), which can lead to arrhythmia, diabetes, and renal failure. Calluses on fingers from friction on teeth to activate gag reflex. Fear of gaining weight losing control of their eating, similar to individuals with bulimia. Amenorrhea = absence of at least 3 period cycles.
