Document Summary

To learn how to distinguish relational transgressions from other types of problematic situations. To explain the advantages of forgiveness and reconciliation. To identify which relational transgressions are the hardest to forgive. Relational transgressions = extremely problematic situations where core relational rules are violated leaving high emotional residue. Core relational rules = expectations about the way we should behave toward others as well as the way they should behave toward us, e. g. socialization process has taught us rules regarding each type of social relationship. Relational rules are broken when rules we consider "sacred" are broken by someone important to us. The more intense the relationship, the more intense the negative emotions when relational rules are broken, e. g. interpersonal violence in romantic or parent-child relationship violates core relational rule. Verbal abuse and physical violence run contrary to a helping orientation which is a byproduct of the close emotional relationship we have with others we care deeply about.
