Officers are usually in the position of having to make decisions on how to best handle a specific matter alone, or with little additional advice and without immediate supervision. Discretion right authorized in s. 504 c. c: r. v. beaudry (2007, hill v. hamilton-wentworth regional police services board (2007) What could be the worst possible consequences? : worst possible consequences if i don"t charge somebody. Among the advantages of police discretion is the fact that: It allows the officer to humanely treat people, giving them a second chance, and improving public perception of the police. If the police were to strictly follow the laws, they would be perceived as being unfair by society and rejected: the other merit of police discretion is that it promotes realistic goals.
