Social Difference: Race & Ethnicity
As biological entities, races do not exist
Race: can be used so long as it refers to social significance that is widely attached to physical
differences (ie, skin colour) rather than to biological differences that shape behaviour patterns
What does exist
- Racialization: the social process in which people are viewed and judged essentially different in
terms of their intellect, morality, values & their worth because of differences of physical type or
cultural heritage; race is a social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more
physical markers, usually with profound effect on their lives

Conflict theory
- Internal colonialism (Ryerson): efforts to Christianize the Indians and settle them into
communities be continued… that schools, preferably manual labour ones, be established under
the guidance of missionaries… their education must consist not merely training of the mind, but
of a wearing from the habits & feelings of their ancestors, and the acquirements of the
language, art & customs of civilized life
oHe wants to turn them to western ways
oIe of racialization: native status, the colour of beauty and Barbie dolls
