• Killing 3+ people at one time & in one place
• Kill people over the course of a few minutes or

Inconsistent definitions
make it difficult to
render a demographic
profile, but generally
tend to be:
• 25-40 years old in most
cases
• Usually male – public
mass murders
• Female mass murderers
– usually familicides
• Disagreement as to the
predominate ethnicity of
the murderer – white or
non-white
• Lacking strong social
support system
C
HARACTERISTICS OF A MASS MURDER
Katsavdakis et al. (2011) & Duwe (2004)
• Triggering event
• Intentionally plan and prepare for assault
• Methodically kill as many individuals as
possible
• Do not threaten beforehand
• Presence of psychotic disorder
• “Warrior Mentality”
• Higher chance of suicide
