PSYC1003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Forgetting Curve, Connectionism, Semantic Network
Document Summary
Clustering: we store similar or related items in groups. Schemas: based on previous experience; expectation influences recall- personalized. Scripts: based on knowledge of common activities (social norms/protocols) Semantic network: pathways that link related concepts- spread widening: strength of associations weakens as we travel outward through network. Specific memories correspond to specific patterns of activation in these networks. Piece of knowledge is based on the pattern of connections. Availability: information may no longer be present in the memory systems. Accessibility: information may be present but not accessible. Usually happens when you are not using the correct accessibility cues. Encoding specificity principle: memory for information would be better when conditions during encoding and retrieval were similar. Recollection of events: details of event; reconstruction of event (schemas) Misinformation effect: a person"s recall is altered by introduction of new or misleading information after the event. Reality monitoring: determining if a memory has come from information or imagination.
