Document Summary

A system of rules for arranging words into sentences. Babbling sounds begin to resemble surrounding language: is babbling a motor achievement or linguistic achievement, babbling is practice for first words meant to convey meaning. Ability to recognize diverse phonemes begins to be lost. Receptive vs. expressive language: can understand language more than they can produce it. Fast mapping: map a word onto an underlying concept after one exposure, comparing something unknown to known. Over- and under-extensions: overextension: using a word incorrectly by using it in a broader spectrum, under-extensions: using a word incorrectly to describe a narrower setting. Telegraphic speech: resemble telegrams (mainly content words) Over-regularization: using grammatical rules incorrectly- generally with tense. Metalinguistic awareness: learning ambiguities, more than one meaning for same word. Bilingualism: acquisition of two languages that use different speech sounds, vocabulary, and grammatical rules. Our context: learning the languages at the same time. Slight disadvantage in terms of language processing speed.
