In social interaction, nonverbal communication is as important as language is. Four misconceptions: emotions are often viewed as a fixed, involuntary response to an external stimulus. That is not correct as research has shown that emotions are something that we can manage to some extent and control. The chapter addresses this through the concepts of emotion management and emotional labour (pp. 72 74): the abstract concepts of status, status set, roles, status conflict, and role conflict are very often dismissed as unimportant. Understanding social structures may help students appreciate the forces influencing the actions of individuals: social interaction is not confined to a specific learning experience. It is an ongoing process of negotiating the ever changing social realities and may be used as tools to create the best possible future.
