Objective: assign organizational tasks to employees to maximize long-term productivity/profitability2. Specialization: focuses work/job to a narrow scope (assembly line, etc: advantages: simplified training, high productivity, low wage costs, disadvantages: difficult to motivate, dissatisfaction. Job enlargement: giving a worker a larger portion of the total activity of making the good or providing the service horizontal loading: same level of responsibility as original job, goal: make job more interesting. Job rotation: workers periodically exchange jobs: workers learn more, can fill in for others, repetitive injuries avoided. Job enrichment: increasing employee responsibility for planning, execution, & control of job vertical loading.
