Saul alinsky"s (1946) article in the american journal of sociology --> concerned the chicago neighborhood, and looked at how poor neighborhoods were ignored by the chicago machine (was an attempt to challenge the machine) Obama (as a liberal) was largely believed to have followed alinsky"s article. Desires to aid the poor and go against middle class values. Danny davis --> encouraged protest against the chicago machine. The chicago machine put mobile black kids into black schools, they also separated white kids. Highways were strategically constructed to ensure the neighborhoods were kept separate. The white machine picked who the black leaders were. Black voters originally voted for an anti-democratic leader (to go against the machine), jane bryne, however she betrayed the black voters after to attempt to conform to the machine. Harold washington --> attempted to stage a coup in order to overthrow the current political machine.
