SOCI 364 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Single-Family Detached Home, Urban Land, Martin Heidegger
Document Summary
Physical/concrete --> actual walls, things you are touching, you can sense the house through the concrete. Market commodity --> when people build houses and then sell on the market. Regulatory creature --> a house with bylaws (e. g. a single detached house), comes with restrictions on what could be built, directs the way it should be built. The houses surrounding your own lot would also impact/influence your living --> the land uses changes over time (goes from mansions, to subdivided apartments, to commercial developments) Reactive regulation: when commodified urban land goes under reactive regulation, as they are in place to reduce the inappropriate land use within the land (reduce factories and clubs being built next to your house) Especially applicable to the rising middle class --> they become an increasingly political force that seeks to protect their own interest and protects their home. They also become a stage/platform for the middle class to present their activism.
