Document Summary
Nationalist movement, flq: kidnap british diplomat, assassinates provincial minister. War measures act: by pierre trudeau, occupies quebec. French canadians are a nation; quebec is national territory. Problematic because there are lots of french canadians outside of quebec. Quebecois are entitled to national self determination: taxonomic identities shaping our perceptions. [1976] parts quebecois elected as government in quebec. [1980] first referendum: ~40% yes and 60% no. Federal government responds: the constitution act 1982 had to go to london if approved. Charter of rights and freedoms provisions: universal rights. Freedom of speech, association, religion, privacy: special rights. Freedom from discrimination based on ethnic, racial, etc: cultural rights. Language rights, bilingualism, french & english equal throughout canada: social rights. Trying to reverse the 1967 decision came back from quebecois nationalists and balance communitarian and universalist principles. The fight of first nations to negotiate their status with canada was seen as a slap in the face because sovereigntists are not entitled to this.
