Social deviance: any violation of norms whether the infraction is as minor as jaywalking or as serious as murder. Crime: violation of norms that have been written into the law, what a crime is varies from one human group to another. Differential association: that learning to deviate or to conform to society"s norms is influence most by the people with whom we associate, it is learned, ex. Friends and neighborhoods if our friends commit criminal acts, so do we: subcultures impart particular attitudes about social deviance and conformity that are learned by members so it can be different for each culture. Labeling theory: labels tend to become a part of our self-concept and so depending on the kind of pressure coming from others, labels can set people on paths that propel them into or diver them from social deviance. Rejecting labels: most people resist the negative labels others try to pin on them, 5 techniques of neutralization, denial of responsibility.
