Document Summary

Context: 4 canadians were killed by the us fighter pilot dropping a bomb on them thinking they were enemies: american president didn"t even mention anything, canadians were beginning to recall the old simmering resentment. Canadians more egalitarian views regarding the status of women and the structure of the family, plus a more skeptical view of traditional institutional authority, also seem to lead them to a more relaxed view of what constitutes a family. Americans by contrast, seeking a little of the peace and order that canadians hoped. Good environment would provide, seem inclined to latch on to traditional institutional practices, beliefs and norms as anchors in a national environment that is more intensely competitive chaotic and even violent. Americans are prepared to put a lot more on the line than canadians to achieve their version of the american dream, including personal risks to life and limb.
