Social class: determined by relationship to means of production (way of creating wealth) Classes: economic categories regarding human interaction in the market. Aggregate of people sharing common situations in the market and therefore having common interests: bourgeoisie/capitalist: those who own property that produce things and wealth, proletariat/worker: only own their own labor. Power in society is based on social class and relationship to means of production. Four classes: large capitalist, small capitalist (petit bourgeoisie): participate in labor along workers, specialists: white collar workers, technicians, civil servants, workers: only have manual labor power. Non-economic social factors are important to determine power, such as. Status: have a (cid:862)style of life(cid:863), based on honor and prestige. An individual can only have one class but be a member of many status groups. Achievement system: allocation of rank depending on a accomplishments & hard work. Ascription system: allocation of rank depending on innate features: certain ethnicities, religions, sexes, etc.
