Rousseau: noble savage the best time for humans was before there was society to corrupt us. Durkheim: there is no such thing as a human without society, everything about us (our names, our language, our personalities, the way we behave) is shaped by society, people without other people are not fully human. Children who from a young age have had little or no human contact: lost or abandon in wilderness, confined, denied social interaction, main point: social interaction with others is critical to our social development. Babies do not naturally become adults: ex. Genie california girl locked in a basement room from age 1 -13. Father made barking, animal like sounds in her presence (mother and brother forbidden to speak to her) When discovered in 1970 (age 13) unable to speak, walk, chew solid food, focus eyes. Learns to walk, dress, eat properly and develop a limited vocab (never beyond a 3-4 year old level.
