Document Summary

Gospel formation: the two-four source hypothesis (for the synoptic gospels) Both matthew and luke have material in common that is not found in mark. No manuscripts but simply a hypothesis or an idea. Gospel formation: the farrar - goulder hypothesis (for the synoptic gospels) Farrar and goulder agreed that mark was written rst. The idea is that matthew expands mark by adding a birth narrative and stuff that jesus said, nishing the gospel in a wholesome fashion. Mark ends abruptly, right into the middle of john the baptist and then con ict. Luke is third - changing parts of matthew that don"t make sense. Matthew is known as the jewish gospel - most jewish oriented of the gospel. Matthew uses the phrase kingdom of heaven" rather than kingdom of god". Luke also wrote acts - more broad than matthew. Luke"s birth narrative, is a conscious rejection of matthews birth narrative.
