Has a more potent and water soluble form of heroin which is produced by chemists adding an acetyl group to morphine. Heroin can cross blood brain barrier more easily before the acetyl group is removed, leaving behind the morphine to act on receptors in the brain: some narcotic analgesics are synthetic. The opioid receptors were discovered before their endogenous ligands. These receptors are also found in the spinal cord and the gut. Opioids acting on receptors in the gut can cause constipation: opioid receptor subtypes - , , and (nop-r)fq. Medicine that targets these receptors can reduce coughing by acting on process that initiates coughing and not the throat: opioid receptors in the nucleus accumbens mediate the pleasurable effect of fatty/sweet foods.
