PSYC 462 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ed50, Indirect Agonist, Cytochrome P450
Document Summary
Psyc 462 lecture notes taken on 9th jan 2018. A garbage processing enzyme of the body. A liver enzyme which metabolizes most drugs. It has highest concentration in its main location in the liver. Adding or removing h, o and -oh groups. It is a non-synthetic simple reaction which converts molecule. It makes components of the drug more polar, thus less lipid soluble. Less lipid soluble means that drug molecules could easily pass through cell membranes which have a phospholipid bilayer. When the converted product is more ionic, it becomes more easily removed from and less likely to be reabsorbed back into the body because it is trapped in urine, etc. After conversion, the product is no longer sticking to target(receptors, etc) Sometimes, drug can be converted to a second form which is as active as the former. A new molecule is made which can be polar and has electrical charge.
