Interactive model of gender-related behaviour: not focused on development along a lengthy period of time. Focus is on immediate surroundings and events which give rise to gendered behaviours. Perceivers gender belief system: activated with situational cues. Gender identity is ones subjective experience of the self as female or male. The extent to which we feel our sense of female-ness or male-ness is congruent with our biological sex. Some people feel their gender identity is not consistent with their sex. Their felt sex and biological sex are not the same (they have gender dysphoria) According to the dsm: gender identity disorder diagnostic criteria. 2 clusters of systems: cross gender association, distain for the sex one has been assigned to. If an individual has an intersex condition they are not given the title of having gender identity disorder. Symptoms include preoccupation with getting rid of primary and secondary sex characteristics.
