Providing care to children who are expected to return home to their birth home at some point: most common, in terms of years, stay for over 4 years. Providing care for children who will not be returning to their birth homes and for whom adoption is not contemplated: uncommon, typically case with older children who don"t want to be adopted. Giving care to children with certain characteristics (hiv, previous sexual abuse: parents get paid a bit more, usually parents need training. Care provided by a relative: increasingly common, 1/3 of foster home, can see advantage over other types of foster homes. Why would a child be place in foster care? no clear-cut rules, a lot fo variabilities. Failure to protect child from maltreatment by others: abuse from teachers, etc. Child"s behavior problems: should be pretty extreme. Foster care vs remaining in home with parents (with maltreatment, etc)
