Document Summary
Relies on infants" fear of strangers, separation from parents, and attachment behaviors. Used at ages when infants have formed attachments, are mobile, and encounters with strangers/brief separation from parents are not too common 10-24mos. 4 things are important: how did infant and mom play together, how infant responds to stranger (afraid?, what happens when mom leaves room (upset?, how does the child respond when the mom comes back? (happy/calm down/stay upset) * through this can classify different forms of attachment. Secure attachment: explores away from parent, use parents as secure base when playing, show wariness towards stranger, crying/searching when parent leaves, re-engage and be comforted when parent returns. Insecure-resistant: keep very close to parents (doesn"t explore), very distressed by stranger and parent leaving, but act ambivalent on reunion. Insecure-avoidant: not distressed by parent leaving, actively ignore/avoid parents on reunion. Disorganized: don"t fit any classification, show contradictory behaviour patterns (sometimes hit parents)
