Document Summary

Mind and body relationship as viewed thru time. Interplay of biological, psychological and social factors in health/disease. Holism: mind and body = each part of same system. Dualism: mind and body = two separate systems. Eastern view tends to be more so holistic. Western view is coming full circle in the answering of this question. Middle ages had the priests as the physicians. Renaissance: this is where dualism began to be developed. Priests would treat the mind, as physicians would treat the body. And today, we experienced a big shift too, from the biomedical model to the biopsychosocial model. Idea that 4 different humours of circulating fluids in the body and their associated temperaments (galen) Yellow bile: choleric; chronically irritable and angry (type a personality?) The 4 humours believed thru middle ages too. Penance would involve prayer or good works. Attempts to break away from superstitions of past centuries. Body: physicians, physical evidence = sole basis for diagnosis.
