PSYC 314 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Health System, Fetus, Trepanning
Document Summary
Health (1948): a complete state of physical mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease : not de ned by the absence of illness, health is a balance of physical, mental and social well being. Health promotion and maintenance: exercise, health habits. Work with people who are sick to help them adjust and follow treatment. Attempt to improve health care and form health policy. Etiology: refers to origins or causes of illness. (behavioral and social factors that cause health problems) Philosophers have argued whether mind and body are one system or two separate systems. We have come a full circle in out beliefs. Earliest times: mind and body considered one unit. Believed that disease arose when spirits entered the body and spirits were exorcised. Trephination: a procedure where holes are made in skulls that allow spirits to leave while the physician or shaman performs a ritual.
