PSYC 309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Electroencephalography
Document Summary
Lateralization: divided into 2 halves, split down middle from front to back, halves called hemispheres, children more evidence of being more lateralized than adults, connected by commissures, split brain patients. Look at the world in a disconnected or fragmented way. Ted talk - lot left to learn - not able to quantify all the unknowns of the brain yet, and don"t think we will be able to. Event-related potential (erp) - average wave time-locked to a stim or response which can be compared between groups and conditions. Averaging multiple trials allows zeroing out of brain activity unrelated to task of interest. Erp components: peaks and valleys assoc with speci c cognitive processes. Eeg can tell when a process occurs, can it discriminate between one stim or the other. Good temporal resolution, inexpensive, non-invasive, direct measure of brain activity. Poor spatial resolution, correlational - can"t infer eeg activity causes.
