PSYC 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cell Group, Phlegm, Pituitary Gland
Document Summary
Types of hormone action - classic vs non classic; rapid vs slow; brief vs sustained. Greeks suggested temperament and emotions could be explained by huours - black bile, phlegm, yellow bile, and blood. Hormones: are chemicals, secreted by one cell group, that travel through the bloodstream to act on targets. Endocrine glands: release hormones w/in body; greek endon, within; krinein, to secrete. Exocrine glands: use ducts to secrete fluids, such as tears and sweat outside the body. Anterior pituitary hormone secretion by thyroid, adrenal cortex, and gonads; growth. Posterior pituitary water balance; salt balance. Adrenal cortex (outer bark) salt and carbohydrate metabolism; inflammatory reactions. Adrenal medulla (inner core) emotional arousal. Gonads (testes/ovaries): body development, maintenance of reproductive organs in adults. Castration: the removal of gonads (usually testes), results in behavioural and physiological changes.
