Fb understanding in infants <4years: 15 months, different tasks: choice vs looking time, problem is with choosing response and inhibiting own-knowledge response, implicit vs explicit understanding, but, clearly something is different at 4 years. Communicating feelings to others through facial expressions, gestures, and vocalizations. Primary emotions: develop early, seem to be universal, surprise, interest, joy, disgust, anger, sadness, fear. Secondary emotions: self-conscious thought to require some awareness of self, shame, guilt, embarrassment, pride, envy. Newborns likely have some basic emotions: positive vs negative. Most researchers believe that all emotions develop by 2 years, but lots of debate over when individual emotions come online! Theories: discrete emotions theory: emotions are innate and different from each other from very early on. Expression of emotions is influenced by social goals and context.
