Language will suck harder to hear language that they heard in utero than a foreign language. Language preference even when baby is only a few hours old. Familiar or new stimulus gets infant to suck harder. Neural and physiological methods: kick, heart-rate, brain activity, can be recoded even when babies are asleep! Researchers must evaluate the possibility of stress, anxiety, self-doubt, fear, lowered self-esteem, etc. that might come from being in a study. Weigh these risks versus the possible benefits of a study. Irb: institutional review board: group set up by the institution (university, hospital, etc. ) that evaluates the risks vs benefits of proposed research. Records how child reacts to a stranger when mother leaves the room. Reunion which researchers interested in; when mother returns to the room after stranger appears. Society for research on child development: ethical standards for research.
