Group of conditions that involve physical symptoms combined with abnormal thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in response to those symptoms. Involve patterns in which patients complain of bodily symptoms that suggest the presence of medical problems but there is not obvious medical explanation that can explain the symptoms. All include someone with a preoccupation with some aspect of their health to the extent that they show significant impairments in functioning. Affected patients have no control over their symptoms, not intentionally faking symptoms either. In dsm iv disorders included hypochondriasis, somatization disorder, pain disorder. Dsm 5 now would be dxed with somatic symptom disorder. Disproportionate and persistent thoughts about the seriousness of one"s symptoms. Persistently high level of anxiety about health or symptoms. Excessive time and energy devoted to these symptoms or health concerns. These symptoms have persisted for atleast 6 months. Frequently engage in illness behaviour that is dysfunctional - seeking additional procedures.
