Establishing causality requires establishing: covariation/correlation, directionality, that there are no extraneous (3d) variables. The iv is manipulated rather than measured: different study groups (conditions) are exposed to different levels of iv. Groups of participats are formed via random assignment. The groups are treated exactly the same except for the level of iv each group is (or treatments) exposed to.
