Document Summary

Hunger : number of hours since last given food. Obedience : how long you stare in the other person"s eyes, how many electric shocks you give at the request of the experimenter. 3 major types of research designs: non-experimental (correlational, experimental, quasi-experimental. A measure of the extent to which 2 variables are linearly related to each other. Correlation coefficient, r, indicates the direction and magnitude of the linear relationship between 2 variables. Tai-chi example: ucla researches asked 59 adults if they practiced tai chi regularly. Those who reported practicing tai chi reported better sleep quality than those who didn"t. Establishing causality requires establishing: covariation/correlation, directionality, that there are no extraneous (3d) variables. The iv is manipulated rather than measured: different study groups (conditions) are exposed to different levels of iv. Groups of participats are formed via random assignment. The groups are treated exactly the same except for the level of iv each group is (or treatments) exposed to.
