Document Summary

January 22nd, 2015: theories and components of emotion. James- lange theory states that emotions occur as a result of physiological reactions to events. Emotion is the result of arousal brain theorizes emotion based on physiological responses e. g. , see something and your heart rate goes up. Your brain detects this and concludes that you are scared. e. g. , falling ill and then becoming anxious e. g. , heart beating fast and then concluding you are in love. Emotions and arousal occur simultaneously e. g. , i see a snake, i become scared, i begin to tremble. Criticisms: left out contributions of the hypothalamus and amygdala there is no one common physiological response to emotions. Physiological arousal first, then cognitively label as an emotion. Capilano bridge study to exhibit this: an attractive woman approached male about a survey; an increase of males who called her were on a swinging bridge; presumably, the swinging bridge increased arousal since there was fear.
