Document Summary
Emotions are adaptive responses that come from mechanisms shaped by evolution. Darwin suggests that emotional expressions are universal. 7 standardized primary emotions: happiness, sadness, disgust, fear, anger, surprise, contempt. 43 facial muscles in combination to create a smile. Display rules - dictate when emotional expressions are suitable in situations (e. g. , laughing at a funeral) determined by cultural variations learned through socialization. Women tend to: display emotions more readily, frequently, intensely, and easily (especially crying and laughter- men display more anger) May be product of evolution as men were typically hunters, and aggression was necessary. Women are also better at articulating/expressing emotions: parents may socialize their children to display gender appropriate expressions. Japanese focus much more on eyes in emotion, hence why japanese culture is like ^_^ In a picture determining emotion in context, japanese people focus on people surrounding the subject. Americans focus much more on mouth in emotion. Americans focus on the subject (central figure)
