Document Summary
Dsm & dsm ii: paragraph descriptions lots of room for interpretation very low inter-rater reliability low reliability = no validity. Dsm iv-tr: specific criteria rated one at a time, min. # required to meet diagnosis less room for interpretation higher inter-rater reliability (validity more possible) heterogeneity: people w/ different symptoms, same diagnosis & treatment symptoms could ebb and flow. Problems: some axis i disorders are long-term (e. g. gad), some axis ii disorders curable. Gaf scale = not reliable/valid, therapists used to indicate treatment needed comorbidity (anxiety and depression = 50% overlap: more common than having only one diagnosis, indicates that the classification system is inaccurate. Very little change to diagnoses themselves (some exceptions) Large structural changes: addition of dimensions, can now diagnose w/ levels of severity, scale of functioning, axes i, ii, and iii combined into single axis (now just one line, multiple diagnoses, axis v omitted.
