Experience: years in school, number of siblings, etc. State differences: temporary differences between people"s psychology (e. g. , hunger, anger). Trait differences: permanent, enduring differences between people"s psychology (e. g. , shyness, friendliness, courage). Personality: a person"s characteristic and enduring style of behaving, thinking, and feeling (i. e. , traits, not states) Personality factors: underlying traits on which all people can be high, low, or anywhere in-between. Every person is some mix of these factors. Problem#1: too many factors, no rule and scientifically understanding personality becomes impossible. Problem#2: too few factors, and personality theory is trivial and true of every one and we still don"t explain. Correlations can identify factors: people with similar personality factors will show correlations on simple personality tests. The most widely accept theory of the underlying core traits of personality. Openness to experience: person"s curiosity for experiencing new and varied things. It is strongly related to one"s intellect and imagination. Conscientiousness: the factor describing the person"s degree of thoughtfulness, organization (order)
