Form follows function: if we want to understand how something works, we need to know what it is working for. Ex) to know about the engine or thermometer, we need to know about powering vehicles or measuring temperature. Thinking is for doing then the function of mind is to help us do those things that sophisticated animals have to do in order to prosper.
