Document Summary

The biology of memory: the case of hm. Had most of his hippocampus and all of his amygdala removed. Hm cannot put content of working memory into long term memory. Showed the hippocampus makes short-term memories into long term ones. Although the hippocampus is responsible for memory different kinds of memory are dependent on different parts of the brain. 2 types of memory retrieval: explicit memory retrieval: conscious and intentional retrieval. Requires recognition if something is familiar, like on a x-choice test: implicit memory retrieval: memory influences our behaviour without conscious awareness. Early childhood experiences, procedural tasks (not all implicit memories are procedural). Hm could remember how to do star test even though could not recall ever having done test before. Enhanced ability to think of a stimulus as a result of a recent exposure to the stimulus; less cortical activation (perceptual and conceptual priming)
