Resisted by many, but by 1930 nearly all africans were colonized in about 50 colonies marked out by previously non-existent borders: very few borders based on natural ethnic groupings or established communities. Somali people divided among 4 colonial systems (br. Ethiopia/italy: number of european officials governing colonies was always small. 40 million nigerians vs. 380 british officials. Colonial powers had to seek out local leaders through which they could exercise indirect rule (common feature of global colonial systems) but specific to africa. Search for local elites was focused around concept of tribes .
