Document Summary

Theory proposing that emotions are produced by an undifferentiated state of arousal along with an attribution (explanation) of that arousal. Lo 11. 2 identify unconscious influences on emotion. Unconscious influences on emotion: variables outside our awareness that can affect our feelings. Many of our behaviour is produced automatically. Subliminal exposure to faces displaying a specific emotion changes participants moods in the direction of that emotion and even produces changes in facial muscles corresponding to that emotion. Theory that blood vessels in the face feedback temperature information in the brain, altering our experience of emotions. There"s scientific support for the facial feedback hypothesis. Still, it"s not clear that these effects work by means of facial feedback to the brain. An alternative hypothesis for these effects is classical conditioning. Lo 11. 3 explain the importance of nonverbal expression of emotion. Nonverbal leakage: unconscious spillover of emotions into nonverbal behaviour. Nonverbal leakage is often a powerful cue that we are trying to hide an emotion.
