Document Summary
Lo 7. 7 describe how the relation between encoding and retrieval conditions influences remembering. Encoding specificity: finding things where we left them. Encoding specificity: phenomenon of remembering something better when the conditions under which we retrieve information are similar to the conditions under which we encode it. Two kinds: context-dependent learning and state-dependent learning. Superior retrieval of memories when the external context of the original memories matches retrieval context. Superior retrieval of memories when the organism is in the same physiological or psychological state as it was during encoding. State-dependent learning sometimes extends to mood, in which case it"s term mood- dependent learning. Mood-dependent learning can result in a retrospective bias. Lo 7. 8 describe the role of long-term potentiation in memory. Memories of different types of experiences are stored in different brain regions. Long-term potentiation is the gradual strengthening of the connections among neurons from repetitive stimulation.
