Statistics: the application of mathematics to describing an analyzing data. 2 types of descriptive statistics: central tendency: measure of the central scores in a data set, or where the group tends to cluster. 3 measures of central tendency: mean, median, and mode. Median: middle score in a data set. Mode: most frequent score in a data set: variability (dispersion): measure of how loosely or tightly bunched scores are. The simplest measure of variability is the range: difference between the highest and lowest scores] 02. Standard deviation: measure of dispersion that takes into account how far each data point is from the mean. Standard deviation are less susceptible to extreme scores than ranges are. Inferential statistics: mathematical methods that allow us to determine whether we can generalize findings from our sample to the full population.
