Document Summary

Memory : the retention of info over time. The paradox of memory our memories are often accurate. but memories can also be surprisingly malleable and prone to error. When trying to recall an event, we actively reconstruct our memories using the cues and info available to us. Memories can be shaped by our expectations and our cultural backgrounds. There are three major systems of memory, each different in span (how much info each system can hold) and duration ( how long a period of time it can hold) Brief storage of perceptual information before it is passed to short-term memory. Buys our brains a bit of extra time to process incoming sensations. Also allows us to fill in the blanks in our perceptions and see the world as an unbroken event. Iconic memory : visual sensory memory; lasts only a few seconds before we totally forget. Echoic memory : auditory sensory memory; can last longer (5-10 seconds).
